Columbia County sheriff remains hospitalized after deer struck motorcycle

Columbia County Sheriff Roger Brandner and his wife were seriously injured Oct. 11 when a deer ran into their motorcycle as they were returning from church, Brandner said Wednesday. Both were taken by medical helicopter to a hospital.

Brandner remained hospitalized as of Oct. 21 and expected to be released later in the week. He did not provide details about his wife’s injuries or recovery.

The sheriff said he has stayed in contact with the department since within hours of the crash. Chief Deputy Bisch has kept him informed about operations and sought guidance as needed, Brandner said, adding that the office’s work has continued without disruption.

Brandner praised the department’s administrative team and thanked first responders, surgeons and the trauma team at Marshfield Clinic for his care. He said he looks forward to returning to work when he has recovered.
