Warren County court sets 11 a.m. arraignment for man charged in trooper’s death
Emonnie Branch is scheduled to appear Tuesday in Warren County after being indicted in the September killing of Kentucky State Police Trooper Hayden Phillips. Branch remains jailed after a judge denied bond.
A 51-year-old man accused of killing Kentucky State Police Trooper Hayden Phillips is scheduled to be arraigned at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Warren County Circuit Court.
Emonnie Branch faces three charges stemming from Phillips’ death: murder of a first responder, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and tampering with physical evidence. A Warren County grand jury returned the indictment. Branch has remained in custody since a judge denied bond.
Phillips, 28, was shot during a September traffic stop on Interstate 65 near Bowling Green, according to investigators. They say patrol-car video shows Phillips approach Branch’s vehicle before being shot twice. Branch then drove away, and authorities arrested him in Louisville after an hours-long manhunt.
Phillips was assigned to Kentucky State Police Post 3 in Bowling Green and previously worked for the Glasgow Police Department. He is survived by his wife and three sons.
The arraignment is an initial court appearance at which charges are formally addressed; Branch is accused of the crimes and has not been convicted.
