Louisville to mark UPS Flight 2976 anniversary with bells, silence and yellow lights

Louisville will hold a citywide remembrance on Nov. 4, the first anniversary of the deadly UPS Flight 2976 crash that killed 15 people. Mayor Craig Greenberg announced the observance, called “Louisville Remembers Together,” on Oct. 21, saying it is intended to honor those who died and support their families and others affected by the crash.

At 5:14 p.m.—the approximate time of the crash—churches, other places of worship and institutions across the city are encouraged to ring bells or carillons for one minute. A minute of silence will follow at 5:15 p.m. Organizations with bells or carillons that want to participate can contact the Mayor’s Office at 502-574-2003.

Louisville Metro Hall, the Big Four Bridge and the spires at Churchill Downs will be illuminated in yellow that evening. Residents are also invited to wear yellow or light their buildings in the color.

A private memorial event is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Grade A Auto Parts on Melton Avenue, with remarks from Greenberg and other local leaders. The event will be available to watch online.

The observance gives residents several ways to take part in remembering the victims and recognizing the lasting effect of the crash on families and the broader community.
