Grand jury indicts two in fatal shooting of Valley High student at Louisville bus stop
Tayon Hassell and Akira Thompson face murder and other charges in the August killing of 16-year-old Dannady Greene. Both are scheduled to be arraigned in Jefferson County Circuit Court on Monday.
A Jefferson County grand jury has indicted Tayon Hassell and Akira Thompson in the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Dannady Greene, who was shot while waiting for her school bus on Beech Street in Louisville on Aug. 25.
The indictments charge both with murder by complicity, tampering with physical evidence by complicity and possession of a handgun by a minor by complicity, according to the Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. They are scheduled to be arraigned at 3 p.m. Monday in Jefferson County Circuit Court.
Greene, a student at Valley High School, died days after the shooting. Hassell and Thompson were arrested last month. They were juveniles at the time; Thompson has since turned 18, and their names were released after the case proceeded through the adult court system.
According to police, Thompson and Greene knew each other and had a previous altercation in March. Investigators said witnesses reported that a car was waiting near the bus stop before Greene arrived. Police allege Thompson was driving and got out to confront Greene, while Hassell was in the car.
Police said Hassell threatened Greene with a gun when she declined to fight. When she ran, he allegedly fired multiple shots, striking her in the head. Thompson was arrested, and Hassell later turned himself in, police said.
The charges are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
