Family intervenes after alleged armed abduction attempt outside Salem home

A Borden man is facing several charges after allegedly grabbing a teenage girl outside her home in Salem and threatening her with a gun in an attempt to force her into his car, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department said.

Deputies were called to a home on North Naugle Road at about 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, after a report of an attempted abduction. Investigators said the girl screamed and struggled to get away, drawing family members outside. Her relatives intervened and detained the man until deputies arrived.

Authorities identified the suspect as Jeffrey Allen Mauck, 53. Investigators said they recovered a revolver, ammunition, handcuffs and two folding knives during the investigation.

Mauck was taken to a local hospital before being booked into the Washington County Detention Center. He faces preliminary felony charges of attempted kidnapping, criminal confinement, aggravated battery and pointing a firearm, as well as a misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The sheriff’s department said the case has been sent to the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office for review and consideration of formal charges. Sheriff Brent Miller said officials were thankful the girl escaped and her family responded quickly.

The charges are allegations; formal charging decisions are pending prosecutor review.
