Panhandle counties order coastal evacuations as Isaias nears landfall

Hurricane Isaias was forecast to strike Florida’s eastern Panhandle overnight Friday or Saturday as a Category 3 storm, bringing winds up to 110 mph and storm surge as high as 9 feet. Gov. Ron DeSantis urged residents to prepare as officials reported mixed compliance with evacuation orders.

Panhandle counties order coastal evacuations as Isaias nears landfall
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida officials urged residents to finish preparing for Hurricane Isaias on Friday as the storm approached the Panhandle, with forecasters expecting it to make landfall overnight or Saturday as a Category 3 hurricane. Gov. Ron DeSantis said at a Friday briefing at the state Emergency Operations Center that the storm could come ashore between Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties. It was expected to move north into Alabama after bringing winds of up to 110 mph and storm surge of as much as 9 feet to parts of the eastern Panhandle. Counties facing the greatest risk had ordered evacuations for people in coastal and low-lying areas. But DeSantis said reports on whether residents were leaving were mixed, and some people planned to remain on their property. “Some people just want to stay on their property and they want to just sit there and ride it out, and I get that,” DeSantis said, while urging Floridians to take the danger seriously. The governor said upper-level wind shear associated with El Niño could weaken Isaias, but officials were still preparing for a major hurricane. The Florida Division of Emergency Management had also requested a pre-landfall emergency declaration from President Donald Trump. The forecast underscored the immediate risks facing Panhandle communities, particularly residents in areas exposed to coastal flooding and storm surge. Officials’ evacuation orders were intended to move people out of those vulnerable areas before conditions made travel dangerous.
