ICE shooting in Marble Hill draws defense from Homeland Security secretary
A 28-year-old Dominican national was shot by an ICE officer during an operation in New York City on Thursday, with his 5-year-old son in the vehicle. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin defended the officers Friday as an investigation into the shooting proceeds.
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot Oscar Bregal, a 28-year-old Dominican national, during an operation in the Marble Hill neighborhood of New York City on Thursday. Bregal’s 5-year-old son was in the vehicle, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said Friday.
Mullin said plainclothes ICE officers stopped Bregal’s vehicle and identified themselves. He said Bregal tried to drive away, and an officer fired. An investigation into the officers’ actions is underway, Mullin said.
At a news conference, Mullin characterized Bregal as one of “the worst of the worst” and said he was “a threat to our community.” The remarks came as New York officials increased pressure on federal immigration agencies following the shooting.
Mullin also criticized Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul, saying they were not doing enough to assist immigration officers. The account of how the shooting unfolded was Mullin’s description; the investigation remains ongoing.
