Manhattan ICE shooting leads Mamdani to seek halt to city enforcement
NEW YORK — A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a man in Marble Hill, northern Manhattan, shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday, according to the NYPD. The shooting prompted Mayor Zohran Mamdani to call President Donald Trump and demand a stop to ICE enforcement actions in the city. Mamdani said early reports indicated that agents surrounded the man and a 5-year-old child in a car before firing multiple rounds. The child’s condition and the man’s condition were not immediately provided in the information released by the mayor and police. “This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation,” Mamdani said in a social media post. He said he would tell Trump, when they spoke, to end “all ICE enforcement actions in our city,” adding that he would not stand by while agents “terrorize our communities.” As of 8 p.m. Thursday, Mamdani had not reached the president, according to his spokesperson, Dora Pekec. The shooting put the mayor’s call for a halt to federal immigration enforcement in New York into direct focus. The available details about the encounter remained limited Thursday night.
