D.C. Guardsman wounded during overnight intervention in Southeast fight
A National Guard member was shot in the leg shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday while trying to intervene in a fight in Southeast Washington. The guardsman’s injuries are not life-threatening, police said.
A National Guard member was shot in the leg late Sunday while attempting to break up a fight in Southeast Washington, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
The guardsman, whose identity has not been released, was recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll told reporters Monday. The shooting happened shortly after 11 p.m., police said.
The guardsman and several other Guard members were in a van monitoring the neighborhood when they saw the fight, Carroll said. As they got out to intervene, gunfire erupted. Carroll said the Guard members ordered a person with a gun to drop it; the person then pointed the weapon toward them, and the Guard members fired back.
The incident occurred amid the National Guard’s deployment in Washington. President Donald Trump sent Guard members to the city last year as part of what he described as a public safety emergency. Police have not released the wounded guardsman’s name or further details about the person who was confronted.
