The 16-year-old suspected shooter was found dead inside the school after a community member followed him into the building and shot him, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said. Police have not provided further details about the community member or the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Authorities received a report at 12:59 p.m. of a shot fired into a car outside the school. Officers arrived within minutes, and additional emergency calls came from inside the building, police said.
Two people — identified by police as another child and a teacher — were taken to St. Charles Bend hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.
The Bend-La Pine School District said the school was placed in lockdown. Silver Rail serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade and had 459 students enrolled last school year, according to the Oregon Department of Education. Bend is more than 100 miles southeast of Portland.
