Rachel’s overnight rain sends floodwater across Las Vegas roads, closes Strip-area routes
Flooding and debris forced temporary closures on Koval Lane and Winnick Avenue after heavy overnight rain from post-tropical cyclone Rachel. Crews cleared the roads and reopened them; high winds also brought down power lines in North Las Vegas.
Heavy overnight rain and wind from post-tropical cyclone Rachel flooded roads near the Las Vegas Strip, shutting down Koval Lane and Winnick Avenue for much of Sunday morning as crews cleared mud and debris.
Floodwater overwhelmed roads behind the LINQ Hotel and storm channels near Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. Debris and trash collected at channel gates, and floodwaters damaged fences near Koval Lane and Winnick Avenue. The roads reopened after crews finished cleanup, though dust from dried mud remained.
The storm’s winds also knocked down power lines near Lone Mountain and Camino Al Norte in North Las Vegas. NV Energy crews were working in the area.
Visitors described heavy rain overnight and disrupted traffic in the morning. Houston resident Leronne Charles said he had not realized how severe the weather was until he went outside and saw the damage. Canetha Buchanan said roads were closed and recalled seeing cars being taken away, though she could not tell whether they had been stranded by flooding or involved in crashes.
