Missing water-system devices disrupt eight businesses at Deer Springs Town Center
At least eight businesses in North Las Vegas lost running water after four or more backflow devices went missing, leaving some to improvise and others to close. The property manager estimates the damage at $10,000, and the city says it is working with the owner on repairs.
At least eight businesses at Deer Springs Town Center in North Las Vegas were without running water Monday after backflow-prevention devices went missing from the property, disrupting operations and forcing some businesses to close.
Property manager Duc Lu said at least four devices were believed to have been stolen from near the businesses on the shopping center’s south end. He estimated the damage at about $10,000. The water outage began Oct. 10, according to Lu.
Workers at Get Nails used a van carrying a 125-gallon tank to bring water to the salon, pouring it into buckets to use as sinks for handwashing. Deer Springs Modern Dentistry closed Monday because it could not see patients without running water. Restaurant and taproom Servehzah also shut for the day and told customers on social media it was working to reopen as soon as possible.
The dental office manager said repairs were expected by noon Tuesday. The North Las Vegas Utilities Department said it was aware that copper parts had been taken from the devices and was working with the property owner to make repairs as quickly as possible.
Lu said the department told him thefts of backflow devices have been a recurring problem. The city did not address that claim in its response.
The disruption also affected customers. Daron White, who stopped at Servehzah to pick up food, said the closures hurt the community, describing the business owners as good people.
