Two men critically wounded in early-morning shooting at Jacksonville’s University Place Apartments

Two men were critically wounded in a shooting early Monday at University Place Apartments in Jacksonville’s Arlington neighborhood, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

Officers were called shortly after 6:15 a.m. to the complex at 3285 University Boulevard North after a report of a shooting. A woman who called police said she heard six gunshots.

Police found a man in his early 30s with a gunshot wound to the neck. Paramedics took him to a hospital in critical condition. A second man, in his mid-30s, arrived at a hospital after a friend drove him there; he had been shot in the chest and was also listed in critical condition. He told investigators he was involved in the same shooting, police said.

Investigators detained a man inside an apartment, but had not announced an arrest. Police said they were still working to establish what happened. It was not clear whether the shooting was related to a domestic dispute, though investigators said it did not appear to involve gangs or groups.

Residents described worry about gun violence in the area. Arthur Resler said he was concerned but did not plan to leave, adding, “This is where I live; I just hope it doesn’t happen to me or someone I know.” Residents said they hoped apartment cameras captured footage that could help investigators.
