A man died after being shot shortly after 12:30 a.m. Monday in Jacksonville’s Durkeeville neighborhood, near Edward Waters University, police said.

First responders were called to West 13th Street near Pullman Avenue for an adult man believed to be in his early to mid-30s. Attempts to save him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police said multiple people had been detained and were being interviewed. Sgt. Saunders said investigators believed all parties were accounted for and there was no threat to the community. The circumstances leading up to the shooting were not immediately known, and police had not released the man’s identity.

The shooting occurred a few blocks from Edward Waters University, where students expressed differing views about safety. Student Riyon Clark said, “A bullet don’t got no name on it, so you have to be careful wherever you go.” Another student, Kennedy Richardson, said she felt safe, citing campus security patrols and the nearby police presence. Student Marcuss Ealy raised concerns about the protection security provides.

The investigation was continuing Monday. Police had not said whether the man was shot inside or outside the property where the shooting occurred.
