St. Johns County inmate accused of plotting witness’s killing as drug case proceeds

A 42-year-old St. Johns County inmate is accused of trying to arrange the killing of a confidential informant expected to testify in a pending drug case against him, according to an arrest warrant released this week.

Investigators allege Dustin Furnal discussed a $10,000 payment and a plan to give the intended target drugs laced to cause a fatal overdose. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office announced that Furnal faces charges of solicitation to commit murder and tampering in a first-degree felony proceeding.

The warrant says a person contacted detectives in September with information about a possible murder-for-hire plot. That person told investigators Furnal said his attorney had suggested the informant’s cooperation could affect the outcome of his pending cases, according to the warrant.

Investigators say Furnal was asked whether he was sure the person was involved in his case. The warrant quotes him answering, “Yes, positive. 100%.” In a separate alleged exchange about the plan and payment, Furnal reportedly said, “Nah, ain’t nobody gonna miss him. He has a kid.”

The warrant also alleges that messages sent through the jail used “materials” to refer to payment and “home remodeling” as coded language. It says the informant later told detectives Furnal had mentioned wanting other possible informants killed as well.

Sheriff’s officials said detectives reviewed hours of recorded conversations, jail calls and visitation recordings. Furnal has been held in the county jail since June on multiple felony charges, including trafficking fentanyl and methamphetamine, as well as other narcotics- and evidence-related charges. Court records show his bond was revoked Oct. 17.

The allegations are not proof of guilt. The new charges concern an alleged effort to silence a witness in a pending criminal case; the warrant does not establish that the intended target was harmed.
