Northside neighbor disputes account of fatal Jacksonville police shooting
A woman was fatally shot by Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers Sunday at the corner of Biscayne and Mar Vic on the city’s Northside, where police say she fired at a patrol car. A neighbor who witnessed part of the encounter challenged the police account and questioned whether it could have ended without the woman’s death. The neighbor, who asked not to be identified, told Action News Jax she saw the woman backing down the street with a hand in her purse as an officer approached with a shotgun. She said she did not see a gun in the woman’s hand at that point. The witness also said the woman raised her hands, though she could not tell what she had been holding. The neighbor’s doorbell camera recorded gunfire and people screaming. She also recorded video shortly after the shooting, saying that a woman had been killed on her street. The neighbor said she wondered whether officers could have de-escalated the situation. JSO said the woman pulled out a gun and shot at a police vehicle, striking the driver’s-side door. Officers returned fire, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sheriff’s Office shared images of a damaged patrol car and a gun it said the woman used. According to JSO, three officers followed the woman for about a quarter-mile along a neighborhood road, telling her to show her hands. Another officer drove alongside them for cover. The shooting occurred within 12 minutes of officers arriving, the agency said. JSO said it had received three calls about the woman over two days, alleging she had been walking through the neighborhood waving a gun. The department has not released her name or the names of the officers involved; it cited a privacy law for withholding the officers’ names.
