Duval schools reverse Raines volleyball dismissals after review

Raines High players who declined to face Fernandina Beach have been restored to the team after Duval County Public Schools found that miscommunication contributed to their removal. The decision follows a separate controversy over racist conduct alleged at a volleyball match involving Fernandina Beach and Andrew Jackson high schools.

Duval schools reverse Raines volleyball dismissals after review
Several Raines High School girls volleyball players dismissed after refusing to play Fernandina Beach High School have been reinstated following a review by Duval County Public Schools, the district said Oct. 12. The players’ initial removal came after they chose not to take part in the match. The dispute followed allegations of racist behavior at a September game between Fernandina Beach and Andrew Jackson high schools. Two students were disciplined after they were seen holding up a Black baby doll and chanting, according to the report. DCPS said its review considered information unavailable when the original decision was made. The district said “a series of miscommunications” contributed to the initial decision and that the review enabled a more informed outcome. A parent of one reinstated player, who asked not to be identified because she feared consequences for her daughter’s future team tryouts, said her daughter decided not to play after reading about the allegations. The parent said she had not found a team-handbook provision stating that missing a game warranted dismissal and questioned whether the reversal was genuine or prompted by public attention. The parent said she hoped her daughter’s choice would encourage others to stand up for their beliefs. DCPS said student well-being remains a priority and pledged to address concerns with care and transparency. On Oct. 1, the district had said the dismissal decision was made at the school level and was under review. The reinstated players returned as the team competed in a district match Monday, with its season nearing an end.
