Jacksonville Zoo reports child-safety concerns to JSO a day after staff were alerted

A Jacksonville Zoo security supervisor notified the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, Oct. 24, that a man had approached children in the Zoo’s Play Park the previous day, according to a JSO incident report. Zoo staff had been told about the encounters around 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, the report says.

The report describes two separate groups of children approached by the man around 1:30 p.m. Friday. The first person to alert Zoo staff left before staff could obtain contact information. In the second instance, a mother said her daughter told her about the man; the mother and other parents searched for him but did not find him.

The report gives a description provided by a child: a bald man, estimated to be 25 to 45 years old, between about 5 feet 2 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a medium build and complexion. He was reportedly wearing a black shirt, light-blue jeans and white shoes, and carrying a black backpack. Zoo security staff searched the grounds, but did not locate him, according to the report.

A Jacksonville mother had posted on Facebook that a man tried to kidnap her daughter during a field trip. The JSO report records the reported approaches to children; it does not establish that an attempted kidnapping occurred.

The Zoo said Park Rangers responded immediately after receiving the Oct. 23 report and began investigating. It said it had notified JSO, and that it was increasing ranger presence across the grounds, including in the Play Park. The Zoo urged visitors to report safety concerns promptly to a ranger or staff member.

The JSO information report is listed as closed pending additional leads from the Zoo or possible witnesses. Other parts of the report were redacted.
