Fletcher volleyball coach removed while Duval schools investigate team conduct
Duval County Public Schools says it is investigating reports of unsupervised and inappropriate behavior involving Fletcher High School student-athletes, on and off campus. The team’s coach has been removed while the district also examines concerns involving the coach.
A coach for Fletcher High School’s girls volleyball team has been removed from the position while Duval County Public Schools investigates reports of unsupervised and inappropriate behavior involving student-athletes.
The district said Thursday that Fletcher Principal Dean Ledford had met with players and their families to discuss the investigation. The reported conduct involved students both on and off campus, according to DCPS, which did not describe the activities or say how many students were involved.
The district said school leaders made clear that the behavior was unacceptable and that disciplinary measures were being taken under the Student Code of Conduct. It also confirmed that concerns involving the team’s former coach are part of the ongoing investigation. DCPS said Ledford would continue communicating with affected students and families and provide updates as appropriate.
Sources familiar with the investigation have linked it to a suspected hazing incident, but the district has not publicly characterized the conduct that way.
Parents approached at a Thursday match at Ponte Vedra High School offered differing responses. One said she was unaware of the investigation, another declined to comment, and a third—who asked not to appear on camera—said he believed the situation had been blown out of proportion. He said he was not concerned for the students and described the team as “great girls.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and the district has not announced further details about potential disciplinary action.
