Indianapolis taps former Indy Parks strategist to lead equity office
Margarette Webb, a city employee since 2022, took over as Indianapolis’ chief equity officer on Sept. 19. Mayor Joe Hogsett announced the appointment Oct. 14, citing her work expanding access to city resources and services.
Margarette Webb, formerly chief strategy officer for Indy Parks and Recreation, is now Indianapolis’ chief equity officer. Her appointment to the city’s Office of Equity, Belonging, and Inclusion took effect Sept. 19, Mayor Joe Hogsett announced Oct. 14.
Webb joined city government in 2022. At Indy Parks, she led long-range planning, staff development and accessibility assessments, and oversaw work on an $80 million Lilly Endowment grant and other grant-planning efforts. She also guided the department’s accreditation by the National Recreation and Park Association and planning for its 2028 comprehensive master plan.
“Margarette Webb has consistently demonstrated her commitment to improving the quality of life for every Indianapolis resident,” Hogsett said. He pointed to her leadership at Indy Parks and efforts to expand access to resources in underserved communities, adding that he expects her to advance fair, community-focused approaches to city initiatives.
Webb, an Indianapolis native, holds a bachelor’s degree in public policy from Vanderbilt University. Before joining the city, she worked in nonprofit roles focused on hunger reduction and education. Her experience has also included work involving libraries, environmental redevelopment and youth engagement, according to the mayor’s office.
The Office of Equity, Belonging, and Inclusion works on city-county initiatives in four areas: operations and innovation; data and evaluation; strategies and learning; and community and culture. Webb’s role places her in a position to influence how those efforts are carried out across local government.
