Coronado forfeits matchup with Lutheran, citing lack of anti-racism statements

Colorado Springs’ District 11 says Coronado High School will not play Lutheran High School after the two schools and the state athletic association did not issue statements denouncing racism. The decision follows allegations of racial harassment at a Lutheran game and Air Academy’s cancellation of its own matchup.

Coronado forfeits matchup with Lutheran, citing lack of anti-racism statements
Coronado High School in Colorado Springs will forfeit its football game against Lutheran High School in Parker after Colorado Springs School District 11 said it did not receive the public statements against racism it had requested from Lutheran and the Colorado High School Activities Association. The district said it did not believe proceeding with the Thursday game was consistent with its expectations without “a strong, unequivocal statement denouncing racism” from both organizations. The decision follows allegations by Sand Creek High School cheerleaders that they were subjected to racist remarks and blocked from passing through Lutheran’s student section during a Sept. 24 game in Parker. Lutheran’s executive director said he met with Sand Creek’s principal and apologized for the cheerleaders’ experience. He also said the school had received no official report of inappropriate behavior by Lutheran players during the game. Air Academy High School, also in Colorado Springs, canceled its homecoming game against Lutheran scheduled for Oct. 9. Air Academy said it did not have enough coaches for that game. The two school decisions come amid calls for responses from Lutheran and CHSAA following the harassment allegations. The available statements do not establish who made the alleged remarks or whether the allegations have been independently investigated.
