CDOT plans winter sunrise traffic holds on I-70 at Floyd Hill

Eastbound I-70 traffic will be held during periods of intense morning sun near Floyd Hill, where steep grades and sharp turns can make it difficult to see the road. Daily holds are expected from November through February, with alternate routes available through Clear Creek Canyon and on the frontage road.

CDOT plans winter sunrise traffic holds on I-70 at Floyd Hill

Drivers on eastbound I-70 near Floyd Hill should prepare for morning traffic holds as low winter sun makes the mountain highway difficult to see. The Colorado Department of Transportation said the holds will affect the stretch between mile points 244 and 248, from sunrise until 8:30 a.m.

Preparatory holds were set to begin Wednesday morning, Oct. 21, with the daily schedule officially starting in November and continuing through February. CDOT said traffic may be held for at least an hour to protect drivers when glare substantially reduces visibility.

The highway’s steep grades and sharp turns leave less room to see and stop, CDOT said. Glare can also make unexpected hazards, including wildlife, harder to spot.

Drivers seeking a detour can take U.S. 6 east through Clear Creek Canyon or use the eastbound frontage road and re-enter I-70 at Beaver Brook, according to CDOT.
