Wichita soccer complex crash kills 6-year-old and 35-year-old; 10 hurt
A truck drove through a youth soccer game Saturday at Wichita’s Stryker Sports Complex, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man. Police said the driver was in custody and investigators had not determined whether the crash was intentional.
A 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man were killed Saturday after a woman drove a truck through a youth soccer game at Wichita’s Stryker Sports Complex, police said. Ten other people were injured, including five children ages 5 to 9.
The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, was taken into custody. Police had not established whether the crash was intentional. Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses said the driver had cooperated with investigators.
The first 911 calls came shortly before 3:30 p.m., reporting that a vehicle had driven through a game, Moses said. Responders found the boy and man dead at the scene. Both victims were from McPherson and were not related, he said.
The injured included five children and five adults, ages 28 to 68. Their injuries ranged from bruises to severe, but police said they were not considered life-threatening. A 61-year-old woman was also hospitalized for medical issues not caused by trauma.
The driver remained in the truck when responders arrived, along with two children. One of the driver’s children had a game at the complex, but on a different field, Moses said. Bystanders were already providing medical aid to injured people, he added.
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu and Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly expressed condolences to the victims’ families and others affected. Kelly said she had offered state resources to the city.
The city canceled events at the Stryker Sports Complex, which has 11 turf fields. The Kansas State High School Activities Association also suspended its scheduled flag football state championship and other matches through the weekend.
Police said the investigation was ongoing and asked anyone with video of the incident to share it with investigators.
