Van Zandt County deputy killed after gunfire during warrant service near Canton
A suspect fired more than 800 rounds during a shootout that killed Deputy Adam Al-Sherifi and wounded Canton Officer Chris Watson, Sheriff Kevin Bridger said. The suspect, 42-year-old Mi Van Nguyen, was found dead inside his home; officials have not said whether he died by suicide or in the exchange of gunfire.
A Van Zandt County deputy was killed and a Canton police officer wounded after a suspect fired more than 800 rounds during a law enforcement response to a home south of Canton, Sheriff Kevin Bridger said Friday.
Deputies were assisting Canton police with felony warrants for aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a peace officer when officers arrived at the home in the 4300 block of State Highway 198 at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to the sheriff’s office. About 20 minutes later, 42-year-old Mi Van Nguyen opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle, Bridger said.
Deputy Adam Al-Sherifi was struck and died. Canton Officer Chris Watson was also wounded and is recovering, the sheriff said. Bridger credited another officer with providing lifesaving aid while gunfire continued.
Nguyen was found dead inside the home from a gunshot wound. Authorities have not determined whether he shot himself or was killed during the exchange with law enforcement.
The shooting added to a week of grief in the community. The day after the deputy’s death, a house fire killed 27-year-old Jasmine Henson and her four children. Henson was the daughter of a sheriff’s deputy; her husband and another child survived and are recovering, according to the sheriff’s office.
“These are people we know, people we love, families who are a part of this community,” Bridger said, thanking residents and neighboring counties for their support of the grieving families.
