Two charged after newborn is found in Fort Worth motel dumpster
A 23-year-old woman faces a capital murder charge, while her 26-year-old boyfriend is charged with abuse of a corpse, after a newborn was found in a dumpster outside a Fort Worth motel. Police say the investigation was prompted by the discovery Sunday night and later surveillance footage and interviews.
A 23-year-old woman and her 26-year-old boyfriend are in custody after a newborn was found in a dumpster outside a Fort Worth motel, according to police and an arrest affidavit.
Avia Cantrell is charged with capital murder of a person younger than 10. Camron Baker is charged with abuse of a corpse. No bond amounts had been released as of Oct. 20, and the investigation is ongoing.
Officers were called to the Drummers Inn, in the 7300 block of Camp Bowie Boulevard, at about 8:55 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, after someone found an infant in a bag in a dumpster. The child was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
According to the affidavit, a woman who was searching the dumpster found the bag and opened it at a nearby business. She and a friend checked the bag and then alerted motel staff, who helped them call 911.
Investigators reviewing motel surveillance video saw footage of a woman carrying a box of items, including a car seat, to the dumpster where the baby was found, police said. The motel manager identified the woman as Cantrell, who lived at the motel.
The affidavit says Cantrell initially denied being pregnant. In an interview, she later told police that the baby was born in her motel room on Oct. 14. She said she believed the infant had died and put the baby in a bag, according to the affidavit.
Police allege that the baby’s body remained in the room for about four days before Baker put it in an overnight bag and discarded it in the dumpster. The affidavit says Baker acknowledged disposing of the body and told investigators he had not called police because they did not want to “catch a case.”
Cantrell’s three other children were at the motel when officers responded and are now staying with a relative, according to the affidavit.
The charges are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
