NTSB traces fatal Haslet-area crash to brief flight from Hicks Airfield
A Lancair IV-P crashed into power lines about a minute after departing Fort Worth’s Hicks Airfield on Oct. 7, killing its 67-year-old pilot. Investigators are examining flight data and the wreckage; a final report is expected in 12 to 24 months.
A small plane crashed into power lines near Haslet roughly one minute after taking off from Hicks Airfield in Fort Worth on Oct. 7, killing the pilot, according to information released by the National Transportation Safety Board.
The Lancair IV-P departed at about 9:51 a.m. Flight-tracking data reviewed by the NTSB shows it climbed to 875 feet, made a left turn and rose to 1,000 feet. The plane then slowed to a ground speed of 84 knots before descending. At about 9:52 a.m., it struck power lines along the south side of a roadway.
The pilot, 67-year-old John Unangst, was the only person aboard, officials said.
A fire after the crash burned nearby grass and destroyed most of the aircraft, including its fuselage, wings and engine. Officials moved the remaining wreckage to a secure location for further examination.
The NTSB is continuing to analyze the flight data and wreckage. The information released so far does not identify a cause; a final report is expected in 12 to 24 months.
