A man died Wednesday night after a security guard shot him at La Gran Plaza in Fort Worth, where police say the man had been breaking glass display cases at a jewelry kiosk.

Officers were called at about 8:38 p.m. to the shopping center in the 4200 block of South Freeway. Police said the guard, who was armed and working inside the plaza, fired at the man, striking him at least once. The details of the encounter remain under investigation, police spokesperson Officer Buddy Calzada said during a briefing.

After being shot, the man ran from the shopping center, crossed the parking lot and collapsed near Seminary Drive, police said. Officers and firefighters performed CPR and other lifesaving measures, but medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

The man’s identity has not been released. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to determine his identity and the cause and manner of death. Police said no officers fired weapons and no other injuries were reported.

La Gran Plaza’s posted hours showed the shopping center was open during the incident, which occurred about 22 minutes before its scheduled 9 p.m. closing time. Detectives remained at the scene overnight to collect evidence and interview witnesses.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has video to call Fort Worth police at 817-392-4222. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 817-469-8477.
