Two Starbucks locations in Columbus are scheduled to close after Saturday, Sept. 26, as part of the company’s plan to shut 250 stores across the United States this week. The affected cafes are at 1014 N. High St. and 4015 Easton Station. Starbucks confirmed the closures, and employees at both stores said Saturday is their final day of operation. The company has said the closures focus on locations that are not meeting its business goals or its expectations for the customer experience. Starbucks has not publicly detailed how that rationale applies to the two Columbus stores. The High Street location is represented by Starbucks Workers United. More than 700 U.S. Starbucks stores have voted to unionize since late 2021, but the union and the company have not reached a labor agreement. The planned closure is part of the nationwide round; no connection between the store’s union status and the decision to close it has been established. Starbucks says it will try to transfer affected employees to other stores. Workers who cannot be placed elsewhere may receive severance support. The company expects this round of closures to generate $300 million in restructuring charges. It says $200 million will be cash expenses, including lease-exit costs and employee separation benefits, while another $100 million will be non-cash charges tied to disposing of or reducing the value of coffeehouse assets.
