A 42-year-old man has been charged with aggravated arson after authorities say he started three fires at an occupied apartment complex in southwest Columbus and interfered with residents trying to evacuate. Columbus firefighters were called at about 3 p.m. Tuesday to the complex in the 1600 block of Harrisburg Pike after reports of multiple gunshots, according to court records. They forced entry into an apartment occupied by Oyintarimobowei David Osuobeni and found paperwork burning on the kitchen stove, with the burners and oven turned on, the records say. Osuobeni is also accused of setting fires in the building’s front lobby and at a second-floor stairwell doorway. The property manager told investigators she saw him holding a lighter and moving tables to barricade the lobby’s front doors. She also reported that he interfered with residents attempting to get out and saw him near the lobby fire, according to the records. At least 11 police officers and multiple residents were evaluated for smoke inhalation. The records do not specify whether anyone required further treatment or the extent of damage to the building. Osuobeni was charged with aggravated arson, a first-degree felony, and was arraigned Wednesday morning. The allegations have not been proven in court.
