Reynoldsburg center connects storm-damaged residents with federal aid
A Disaster Recovery Center opened at Reynoldsburg Community Church on Oct. 7 to help Franklin and Licking county residents recover from severe weather that struck Ohio from Aug. 10 through Aug. 22. The counties are among seven covered by a presidential major disaster declaration. FEMA staff at the center can help homeowners and renters apply for assistance if storm damage was not covered by insurance or was only partly covered. FEMA spokesperson Jann Tracey described the center as a “one-stop shop.” Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security Director Jeff Young said it is a formal next step after local agencies assessed damage and connected residents with resources, with attention focused on losses that insurance did not cover. The Small Business Administration is also offering disaster loans to affected homeowners, renters, businesses and private nonprofits. Homeowners may apply for up to $500,000 to repair or replace a primary residence. Homeowners and renters may be eligible for up to $100,000 to repair or replace personal property, including furniture, clothing, cars and appliances. Applicants are encouraged to bring documentation of damage, including photos if available. FEMA says residents who have already begun cleanup can still provide pictures; an inspector will contact applicants to arrange a damage assessment. People who apply at the center can return there to check their application status. Residents can also apply for federal disaster assistance online at DisasterAssistance.gov, by phone or through the FEMA app. The center’s specific hours and street address were not provided in the available details.
