Buc-ee’s, Ohio’s Mickey’s reach confidential deal in mascot dispute

Buc-ee’s, Ohio’s Mickey’s reach confidential deal in mascot dispute
Buc-ee’s and Coles IP Holdings, the parent company of Ohio convenience-store chain Mickey’s, have settled a lawsuit over whether the chains’ cartoon mascots are too similar, according to court records. The companies reached a confidential agreement during a settlement conference on Sept. 15. The terms have not been disclosed, and it is unclear whether Mickey’s will alter its logo. Neither company immediately responded to a request for comment. Buc-ee’s filed suit in February, alleging that Mickey’s cartoon moose, called Mickey Moose, resembles the Texas travel-center company’s beaver mascot. The complaint pointed to shared design features, including a smiling cartoon animal facing right against a round background, and argued that customers could be confused. Buc-ee’s also said Mickey’s transition from the name “Mickey Mart” to “Mickey’s” brought the branding closer to its own. Mickey’s countersued in April, accusing Buc-ee’s of unfair competition and malicious litigation. The Ohio company argued that consumers can tell a moose from a beaver and that cartoon animals are common convenience-store mascots. It also said Buc-ee’s was using its greater size to pressure a family-owned business to abandon branding it had built over decades or bear substantial legal costs. The dispute unfolded as Buc-ee’s expanded into Ohio. The company opened its first Ohio location, in Huber Heights, in April and plans another in Mansfield in the second quarter of 2028. Buc-ee’s has 57 stores in 13 states; Mickey’s, founded in Milan in 1982, operates 42 locations in northern Ohio. The settlement resolves this case, but Buc-ee’s is pursuing a separate trademark lawsuit against Beaver’s Mini Mart in Beavercreek over that store’s logo. That case remains pending, according to court records.
