21-year-old killed in northeast Columbus shooting; police seek armed suspect

A 21-year-old man was killed in a shooting Monday afternoon on Albert Avenue in northeast Columbus, and police are searching for a suspect they believe is armed and dangerous.

Columbus police officers responded at about 2:10 p.m. to the 2200 block of Albert Avenue. Luqmaan Cusmaan was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The shooting happened near Alrahma Mosque, where people were attending a funeral. Police Sgt. James Fuqua said investigators do not believe the mosque was targeted. Instead, they think the shooting stemmed from an altercation involving a group of people at a nearby apartment complex.

Police said Tuesday that several people were seen in the area shortly before the shooting. Detectives are working to identify them and determine a motive. Authorities have not released details about the suspect.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said agents were responding, but Fuqua clarified that the officers at the scene were Columbus police officers who also work with the ATF and happened to be nearby for an unrelated reason. The ATF said reports of a possible second victim had not been confirmed.

Albert Avenue near Westerville Road was blocked off for several hours while police investigated. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730.
