Rush-Endeavor deal would unite 12 hospitals and add $1 billion investment
Rush University System for Health and Endeavor Health plan to combine in a system serving more than 2 million patients a year across Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana. The proposed merger includes a $1 billion investment and requires regulatory review, with completion expected in early 2027.
Rush University System for Health and Endeavor Health announced plans Wednesday, Oct. 14, to combine as an integrated academic health system operating under the Rush name. The transaction is expected to close in early 2027, pending regulatory review and approval.
The combined system would include 12 hospitals and more than 400 care sites, with more than 46,000 employees and clinicians serving over 2 million patients annually across Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana, the organizations said.
The plan includes an additional $1 billion investment funded by Endeavor Health. The organizations said a significant share would support community partnerships addressing social determinants of health and infrastructure for underserved communities. They did not provide a more specific breakdown of the investment in the announcement.
Endeavor Health President and CEO Gerald “J.P.” Gallagher said the combined organization aims to expand access to care, research and services close to home. He also said its community-health goals include reducing gaps in life expectancy and improving regional health and well-being.
The proposed combination would bring two major regional health systems under one name. Its effects on patients, workers and local communities will depend in part on the transaction’s final terms and regulatory review; those details were not specified in the announcement.
