Park City officer convicted after unrecorded traffic stops led to sexual abuse charges

A Lake County jury convicted former Park City police officer Patrick Cacho of sexually abusing a woman during two traffic stops, prosecutors said Thursday.

Cacho, 29, was found guilty of 20 counts, including aggravated criminal sexual abuse, criminal sexual abuse, aggravated battery and official misconduct. The three-day trial ended late Wednesday, according to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The woman testified that Cacho initiated the stops in December 2025 and January 2026 and subjected her to nonconsensual sexual contact. Prosecutors said he did not activate his body-worn camera, contact dispatch or document either stop, and threatened her with criminal charges before the assaults.

Illinois State Police investigated after a friend of the woman reported the allegation to Park City police following the second incident. Investigators and other law enforcement officials testified at trial, and prosecutors said police records and phone records supported the woman’s account.

Cacho testified and denied the allegations. Prosecutors said he challenged the woman’s credibility and description of events.

“By sexually abusing someone he had pulled over, this officer failed the public and his fellow police officers in every way possible,” Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said. He said Cacho had abused and intimidated a community member who had trusted him to protect people.

Cacho had been charged in April and was relieved of his police duties after the investigation. He faces up to seven years in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender for life. His next court date is scheduled for Dec. 17.
