Brighton Park shooting leaves 32-year-old woman critically wounded; no arrest reported

A 32-year-old woman was critically injured in a shooting Thursday morning in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood after someone in a passing car opened fire, police said.

The woman was a passenger in a car in the 2400 block of West 47th Street around 9:30 a.m. when a gray sedan pulled alongside, according to Chicago police. She was struck in the head and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. Police reported no other injuries.

The sedan drove south on Western Avenue after the shooting, police said. Fifteenth Ward Ald. Ray Lopez said investigators were considering whether road rage was involved and that the conflict between the two vehicles may have continued for several blocks. Police have not confirmed a motive.

Lopez described the shooting as unsettling for the neighborhood, saying people should not have to fear being shot while waiting at a red light. A man Lopez identified as the victim’s husband was at the scene and visibly distraught. A car seat was visible in the victim’s vehicle, but it was not clear whether children were in the car at the time.

Police closed part of 47th Street for several hours as they investigated. No one was in custody, and Area One detectives were continuing the investigation, police said.
