Palatine teen detained as police investigate alleged threat to Aurora-area Hindu sites
A 19-year-old Palatine man faces felony charges after investigators said they found weapons and a manifesto describing a potential mass shooting. Police said no specific place of worship has been confirmed as the intended target.
A Cook County judge ordered Alexandros Paporakis, 19, of Palatine, detained Wednesday as he faces charges in an alleged plan to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area.
Palatine police said detectives believe Paporakis may have planned an attack for Sunday, Oct. 11, but have not confirmed a specific intended location. Aurora police contacted Hindu places of worship in their jurisdiction to alert them to the potential threat, Palatine Police Chief William Nord said.
Paporakis is charged with making a terrorist threat, a Class X felony, and unlawfully possessing weapons, including a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches, according to Nord. Paporakis is due back in court Oct. 30. The charges are allegations; the case remains under investigation.
Palatine police were alerted shortly after 3:30 p.m. Sunday by Mount Prospect police, who had received a report about concerning electronic messages from Paporakis. Investigators said he had shared a document describing an alleged shooting plan, along with images of a rifle, magazines, body armor and other tactical gear.
Police arrested Paporakis Sunday night as he left his home in the 1300 block of North Baldwin Court. A search of the residence turned up a rifle, multiple loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and tactical equipment, Nord said. Police also reported finding a vest with body armor and a patch displaying imagery associated with white supremacist extremism.
With assistance from the FBI, detectives reviewed electronic communications and a document attributed to Paporakis. Police said the document expressed white supremacist and other extremist views and included references to violence against people of South Asian heritage, particularly people of Indian descent.
The investigation is continuing. Anyone with relevant information can contact Palatine police at 847-359-9000.
