Lemont authorities remove 76 dogs from McCarthy Road home; resident charged

Authorities removed 76 dogs from a home and garage in the 800 block of McCarthy Road in Lemont after police executed a search warrant Thursday, Oct. 22, the Lemont Police Department said.

Police said the warrant was connected to a Firearms Restraining Order issued by a Cook County judge. Before entering the home, officers determined that the number of dogs inside presented safety concerns, and called in Cook County Animal Control and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office Animal Cruelty Unit.

The homeowner was taken into custody without incident, police said. The 58-year-old was charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty and felony weapons offenses.

The dogs were removed with assistance from animal-control agencies in Grundy County, Palos Hills, Bolingbrook and Evergreen Park, along with several local animal shelters. Police did not provide information about the dogs’ health or where they will be housed as the case proceeds.
