Hickory Hills man held after alleged attempts to lure two girls into SUV

A 28-year-old Willow Springs man has been charged with two counts of attempted kidnapping after authorities say he tried to get two girls into his vehicle in Hickory Hills on Tuesday.

Nicholas P. Hayes was ordered held following a detention hearing, according to authorities. He also had two unrelated warrants for public indecency, one from Naperville and one from Waukegan.

Hickory Hills police responded to a shopping center near 95th Street and Roberts Road after receiving a report that a man had tried to abduct a girl. Investigators said a 14-year-old was walking through the center when a man in a silver SUV repeatedly told her to get in. He followed as she tried to walk away, police said.

Authorities said a second encounter had happened minutes earlier. In that case, the driver allegedly demanded that another girl get into the SUV. When she said she was a juvenile and tried to escape, the man got out and chased her on foot, according to police. A witness confronted the man and helped the girl reach safety.

Police shared information about the vehicle with neighboring law enforcement agencies. Willow Springs police used Flock license plate reader cameras to locate it near 87th Street and Oak Grove Avenue, where Hayes was arrested. Victims and witnesses later identified him as the suspect, authorities said.

Authorities said there is no ongoing threat related to the incidents.
