A 23-year-old man from Lake Villa died after the Audi S4 he was driving crashed into several trees early Thursday in unincorporated McHenry, authorities said.
The crash happened shortly after 1:30 a.m. on eastbound Dowell Road near Neville Road. A McHenry County sheriff’s deputy recorded the Audi traveling 74 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. As the deputy turned around to try to stop the car, the driver accelerated and lost control, authorities said.
The Audi left the road and came to rest about 200 feet away after hitting several trees. The impact broke the vehicle into pieces, and the driver was ejected, the sheriff’s office said.
He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.
Because the crash occurred near the Lake County line, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team is investigating. Authorities have not released further details about what led to the driver losing control.
