Chicago man charged after fatal South Side attack and alleged assault

A 58-year-old Chicago man has been charged with murder and other felonies after police said a woman was killed and another woman was sexually assaulted at a South Side residence earlier this week.

Jerry Powe was charged with first-degree murder, murder involving a strong probability of death or injury, three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault with a weapon and aggravated kidnapping causing harm, according to Chicago police.

Officers found a 36-year-old woman dead inside a residence in the 8100 block of South Ellis Avenue. Police said Powe was arrested about an hour after the woman was found. He is also accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 28-year-old woman at the same location.

Powe was scheduled to appear at a detention hearing Saturday. Police had not released additional information about the case.

The charges are allegations; the case will proceed through the court system, where Powe is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
