Chatham man charged in girlfriend’s killing and alleged assault of another woman

A 58-year-old Chicago man faces murder, kidnapping and sexual-assault charges after police say he walked into a South Side station and told officers he had killed his girlfriend.

Jerry Powe is accused of causing fatal injuries to a 36-year-old woman found dead at a home in the 8100 block of South Ellis Avenue around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, police said. The Cook County medical examiner determined she died by strangulation. Authorities have not publicly identified her.

According to a police report, Powe went to the front desk of the Chicago Police Department’s 3rd District station in Greater Grand Crossing, said, “I killed my girlfriend,” and gave officers a location. Police took him into custody and then went to the address, where they met Chicago Fire Department personnel and found the woman dead.

Powe is also accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 28-year-old woman at the same location. Police have not released further details about that allegation. Authorities said Powe lives on the block but have not established publicly whether the alleged crimes took place at his residence.

The charges include first-degree murder, murder based on a strong probability of death or injury, three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault involving a weapon, and aggravated kidnapping. The allegations have not been proven in court.
