Beverly Phono Mart Reopens Nearly a Year After Car Crashed Into Store
Beverly Phono Mart, the Far Southwest Side record store forced to close when a car slammed into its storefront on New Year's Day, held its grand reopening Saturday with music, Marz Community Brewing beverages, and a grateful co-owner thanking loyal customers who kept the business alive through online orders and a pop-up shop.
BEVERLY â Beverly Phono Mart is back in the groove.
The record store at 1802 W. 103rd St. held its grand reopening Saturday, nearly a year after a car crashed into the building on New Year's Day and forced it to shut its doors.
The celebration featured live music and beverages from Marz Community Brewing, drawing a crowd of regulars and neighbors who had waited months for the shop to return.
Co-owner Mallory McClaire said the road back was long, but the community made it possible.
"We're thankful to have a community that comes out and celebrates and supports small business, and many regulars who continually, even when our doors were closed, were placing online orders or special orders that we were delivering to their homes and then supporting us throughout the several months that we were operating in a smaller storefront as a pop-up," McClaire said.
Beverly Phono Mart began as an online-only retailer before opening its brick-and-mortar location in 2021. The New Year's Day crash damaged the storefront and left the business without a physical home for most of the year.
During the closure, the shop kept operating through a smaller pop-up storefront and by delivering special orders directly to customers' homes â a lifeline that McClaire credited with keeping the business afloat.
Saturday's reopening marks a fresh start for the independent record shop, which has become a gathering place for music lovers on the Far Southwest Side. The store's return also represents a small victory for local small businesses still recovering from disruptions caused by crashes and other unexpected setbacks.
For McClaire and the Phono Mart team, the message was simple: the community showed up, and the store is ready to spin again.
