Aurora Skydiving Instructor, 29, Killed in Mid-Air Collision at California Drop Zone
Levi Pimentel, a 29-year-old Aurora resident and lead instructor at iFLY Naperville, died Friday after her parachute entangled with another skydiver's at Skydive Elsinore in California. The FAA is investigating the collision, which occurred about 150 feet above the ground.
A 29-year-old Aurora woman who worked as a lead instructor at an indoor skydiving facility in Naperville was one of two licensed skydivers killed Friday when their parachutes became entangled during a jump at a Southern California drop zone, authorities said.
Levi Pimentel of Aurora and Georgia Jean, 56, of Box Elder, South Dakota, were identified Saturday by authorities in Lake Elsinore, California, as the two people who died in the incident at Skydive Elsinore. Both were experienced, licensed skydivers.
The collision happened around noon Friday, according to Skydive Elsinore. In a statement, the company said the free-fall portion of the jump and the opening of the parachutes went as planned, but that the two skydivers collided at roughly 150 feet above the ground as they prepared to land, causing their parachutes to become entangled.
Both sustained critical injuries when they hit the ground and were pronounced dead at a hospital, the company said.
Pimentel's LinkedIn profile listed her as a lead instructor at iFLY Naperville, an indoor skydiving company. The business did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Federal Aviation Administration was notified of the deaths and is expected to collect the parachutes and conduct an investigation, according to the sheriff's office.
The deaths underscore the risks that remain even for highly trained skydivers during the final, low-altitude phase of a jump, when canopies are close to the ground and there is little time to correct a problem. Skydive Elsinore is a well-known drop zone in Riverside County, southeast of Los Angeles.
For the Aurora and Naperville communities, Pimentel's death removes a familiar figure from the local indoor skydiving scene, where she worked as an instructor introducing newcomers to the sport.
