Isaias could bring 1.5 inches of rain and 30 mph gusts to Charlotte this weekend
Rain from Hurricane Isaias is expected to reach the Charlotte region Saturday and continue into Sunday, with gusts near 30 mph. Forecasters estimate about 1.5 inches of rain around Charlotte and warn of a localized flooding risk in the mountains.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After a mostly dry workweek, rain and gusty winds from Hurricane Isaias are expected to reach the Charlotte region this weekend, with the heaviest impacts forecast in the mountains.
Rain is expected to move north from the south on Saturday, continuing overnight and through much of Sunday, Oct. 11. Forecasts call for about 1.5 inches of rain around Charlotte. The added moisture could offer relief from dry conditions, while heavier totals of 2 to 4 inches in the mountains could cause localized flooding, particularly in flood-prone areas and on south-facing slopes.
The mountain flood risk is not expected to match the catastrophic flooding caused by Hurricane Helene, but residents in vulnerable areas should remain alert, forecasters said. Brief breaks in Sunday’s rain could also allow thunderstorms to strengthen, though the chance of severe storms remains uncertain.
Winds are expected to be strongest Saturday and Saturday night, with gusts approaching 30 mph. Those gusts could cause minor tree damage and scattered power outages.
Isaias became the Atlantic season’s first hurricane late Wednesday, Oct. 7. The storm was forecast to strengthen further before weakening ahead of an expected Gulf Coast landfall late Friday, Oct. 9. Damaging winds and storm surge are possible near landfall, with coastal flooding and erosion risks extending beyond the immediate area.
Charlotte is expected to be unseasonably warm Thursday, with highs in the low to mid-80s, before more clouds bring Friday temperatures down to the upper 70s. The weekend forecast and expected local impacts remain subject to change as the storm moves across the Gulf Coast.
