Three people were injured Saturday, Oct. 17, when a tree limb struck a wagon during a horse-drawn ride at Lazy 5 Ranch, startling the horses and causing the riders to fall, ranch officials said.

The ranch, a drive-through animal attraction in Rowan County near Mooresville, said the three injured passengers were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not available Sunday morning, though officials said at least one person stayed overnight for treatment.

Other passengers were unhurt or declined medical care, and the wagon driver was not injured. The horses were also unharmed and were evaluated before returning to work, according to the ranch.

In a statement, officials said the incident was the first in the ranch’s history to result in a hospitalization requiring an overnight stay. They added that more than three million people have taken the ranch’s horse-drawn wagon rides.

Lazy 5 Ranch is about 36 miles northeast of Charlotte.
