CMPD briefing to come amid investigations into officer conduct and child’s killing
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police scheduled a crime-statistics briefing for Thursday as the department faces scrutiny over officers’ alleged racist messages and improper use of a license-plate camera system. Questions are also expected about the fatal shooting of 4-year-old Caleb Flax.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police planned to discuss crime statistics at a Thursday, Oct. 15, briefing, with questions expected about several investigations involving the department and a child’s killing in northwest Charlotte.
The 10 a.m. briefing comes as more than half a dozen officers have either resigned or been cited for termination in connection with an alleged text-message thread in which officers competed and bragged about arresting or stopping Black residents. The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office and CMPD’s internal affairs unit are investigating.
The department is also facing scrutiny over alleged misuse of the Flock Safety camera system. Court records say Officer Seth Elliot accessed the system after a drug dealer asked him to search a license plate and vehicle used by an undercover officer. Elliot is charged with illegally accessing a government computer.
Police may also face questions about the investigation into Caleb Flax, a 4-year-old boy killed in an early-morning shooting on Sept. 20 while he slept at a home on Grassy Patch Lane. Authorities have described the shooting as part of a retaliatory exchange of gunfire. Five teenagers have been charged with murder, and additional arrests remain possible.
The briefing was announced as the department confronts concerns about officer accountability, public trust and the use of surveillance tools. No crime-statistics figures or additional details about what police would address were provided ahead of the scheduled event.
