Sharon voters rebuke five School Committee members over superintendent hire
A Special Town Meeting voted 520-327 to express no confidence in five of Sharon’s seven School Committee members. The vote followed months of dispute over the committee’s decision to hire a superintendent without a formal search.
SHARON, Mass. — Residents at a Special Town Meeting Thursday voted 520-327 to express no confidence in five of the town’s seven School Committee members, after months of controversy over the committee’s decision to hire a new superintendent without conducting a formal search.
The vote came after roughly two hours of discussion at Sharon High School. A large turnout delayed the meeting’s start by more than an hour as attendees filled the auditorium, cafeteria and a lounge.
Sarah Chiaramida, a parent and member of Residents Engaged for Sharon Excellence and Transparency, a local group supporting the measure, said the vote was intended to convey residents’ loss of trust and demand for change.
The meeting reflected divisions in Sharon over the hiring decision. The no-confidence vote concerned five committee members; two of the seven members were not included in the measure.
