Mass General Brigham starts new round of staff cuts as departments face budget reductions

Mass General Brigham began laying off employees Oct. 13 as the Massachusetts health system seeks to improve its finances, a system spokesperson said Oct. 22.

The nonprofit, which employs more than 80,000 people, has not said how many jobs will be eliminated or how many additional cuts are planned. Spokesperson Jessica Pastore said department and division leaders had been instructed to reduce their budgets but did not specify the size of the reductions.

The latest cuts mark the system’s second layoff round in less than two years. Some pediatricians at Massachusetts Eye and Ear were affected, though they were offered opportunities elsewhere in the system, according to information accompanying a photograph of the hospital.

Mass General Brigham is the state’s wealthiest hospital system. The scale of the layoffs and which other departments may be affected were not disclosed.
