Newton man recovering after stabbing in dispute over alleged car collision

A 60-year-old man says he was stabbed after following a driver to a Newton residential street to exchange information following a minor crash. The accused driver denies hitting the victim’s car and says he acted in self-defense, according to his attorney.

Aetan Mataev, 60, is recovering at home from a stab wound to his ribs after a confrontation between drivers in Newton on Monday. Prosecutors say the other driver stabbed him during a dispute that began with an alleged collision; the suspect’s attorney disputes that account and says her client acted in self-defense.

Mataev said he was pulling out of a driveway when a driver tried to squeeze between his car and the sidewalk, clipped his vehicle and drove away. He followed the driver to Drumlin Road, where he said he asked for the other driver’s information so he could file an insurance claim.

Mataev said he then felt warmth on his abdomen and saw blood. He was taken to a hospital and has since returned home.

Albeldy Pinales-Villar, 28, of Boston, appeared in court Tuesday. Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Lee described the case as a violent crime against a stranger over a minor road incident and said it was concerning to prosecutors.

Defense attorney Christine Breslin said Pinales-Villar, a food-delivery driver, had become lost in Newton. She said he denied making contact with Mataev’s car and claimed Mataev approached him aggressively.

A judge ordered Pinales-Villar to stay away from Mataev and set cash bail at $5,000. Police have taken both men’s cars as part of the investigation. Mataev said the attack was disturbing and should not have happened.
