Fatal head-on crash shuts Route 1 in Revere for hours
A minor driving the wrong way on Route 1 died after a head-on collision early Sunday in Revere. The crash is the latest serious wrong-way incident on the highway in recent months.
A minor died early Sunday after driving the wrong way on Route 1 in Revere and colliding head-on with another vehicle, Massachusetts State Police said.
Police began receiving 911 calls shortly before 3:30 a.m. about a car traveling south in the highway’s northbound lanes near Saugus and Revere. Minutes later, the vehicle struck another car just south of Sargent Street in Revere.
The wrong-way driver’s car was engulfed in flames when police arrived. Officers and firefighters tried to rescue the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene. State police have not released the driver’s identity, citing the family’s privacy.
The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to a Boston hospital. Route 1 remained closed for several hours and reopened around 8:15 a.m.
State Police detectives assigned to the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office are investigating. The crash follows other recent wrong-way incidents on Route 1: Trooper Kevin Trainor was killed in May in Lynnfield while trying to stop a wrong-way driver, and a driver was charged after a wrong-way crash in Peabody less than a month later.
